Identification

A streak narrows a list of candidates. It does not close one, and a great many minerals streak white. Every identification in this register is the keeper's opinion, arrived at with a plate, a hand lens, a magnet and a bottle of dilute acid, and two of the fifteen say on their own page that they are unconfirmed. None of it is a laboratory analysis and none of it should be relied on for anything that matters.

The fee

£18 a specimen, payable when the entry is written and not before. It covers the streak, the photographs, the measurement and the return post. If the powder says nothing usable — and quartz is the standing example, it is harder than the plate and leaves no powder at all — there is no fee and the specimen comes back with a note saying so.

Valuation

No specimen in this register is for sale, none is valued, and nothing here should be read as a statement about what anything is worth. If you want a valuation you want a dealer, and this is not one.

Specimens sent in

A specimen posted in is streaked, photographed and returned at the sender's expense in the same packing it arrived in. It stays the sender's property throughout. Streaking removes a small amount of material — that is what the test is — so do not send anything you would mind being marked. Post is not insured here; send nothing irreplaceable.

The photographs and the numbers

Two sets of photographs ship with this site. The thirty studio plates — fifteen specimens and fifteen streaks — were made for it. The fifteen photographs of the district and the bench are stock, from pexels.com, used under the Pexels licence, which allows commercial use and asks for no attribution; they are credited anyway in data/field.mjs, with the photographer and the source URL for every one. If you are reselling or redistributing this template rather than running a site with it, replace them — stock licences generally permit using an image in a product and not passing the image itself on as part of one.

The measurements are what came off the files, and the scripts that produced them are part of this site; if you disagree with a number, the right response is to re-run them rather than to argue.

Corrections

An entry that turns out to be wrong is corrected in place and the correction is stated on the entry with its date. Nothing is quietly deleted. Write in.

This is a template

The Haverskeld Register, the district, the workings, the keeper, the dates, the telephone number and the domain are all invented, and the domain is a reserved .example address that cannot be registered by anybody. Replace every one of them before you put this online, starting with site in astro.config.mjs and src/data/site.ts.
