Localities

Seven places, all of them within a morning's walk of each other, none of them worth a journey. Everything in the register was picked up off spoil, off gravel or out of a hush; nothing was taken from a working face, and nothing was dug for.

A quarry face of pale banded rock, cut square, with dark seams running through it.

Coldbank Rake

2 entries

An open rake worked along the vein for lead and abandoned for it. The pink and the rose things come from the pockets in the wall rock, not from the vein.

A drystone wall running out across rough moor grass, with a wire fence along it.

Dowlas Gill

1 entry

A steep gill cutting black shale. Cubes wash out of it after rain and are lying on the shingle looking like they were put there.

A timbered adit mouth at the foot of a cutting, closed with boards.

Ladgill Level

2 entries

A drainage level driven west into the fellside, collapsed at about ninety yards. Everything here came off the spoil outside it, never from inside.

The ruin of a stone engine house standing in mist, its chimney still up.

Ravenholme Vein

4 entries

The copper. One vein, one set of secondary minerals, and four of the fifteen entries — everything green and everything blue in this register came from a hundred feet of it.

Collapsed mine timbering in a cutting, with snow still lying in the shaded side.

Sarnwell Sough

2 entries

A sough mouth in the bottom of the valley, still running. The heavy red minerals turn up in the gravel a hundred yards downstream of it and not at the mouth itself.

A run of broken pale blocks, none of them smaller than a fist.

Tarnbeck Hush

2 entries

A hush — a hillside washed out by water let down from a dam above it, which is a Bronze-Age idea worked into the nineteenth century. It leaves a long raw scar and a great deal of loose iron.

A wooden fence and a worn path over the top of a heather ridge.

Whinstone Spoil

2 entries

The spoil of a quarry rather than a mine, so mostly nothing, and then occasionally something in a cavity.

Haverskeld, the seven workings and the person keeping this register are invented. Nothing here is a real mine, a real address or a real business, and no locality on this page can be visited. Rework the names before you use this template for a place that exists.
